It is estimated by the Turks and Caicos Islands Tourist Board that around 60% of visitors to their beautiful part of the world return time and again. By any standard, that is an incredibly high figure. A British overseas territory, the Turks and Caicos Islands consist of 45 islands and cays, but only the eight main islands of Providenciales (the most popular tourist destination), Grand Turk, Pine Cay, Parrot Cay, Salt Cay, North Caicos, South Caicos and Middle Caicos are inhabited. Somewhere between 20,000 and 25,000 ‘Belongers’ – as the islanders are affectionately known – are fortunate to call one of these home. Covering an area of just 193 square miles, the islands are situated 575 miles southeast of Miami, and within easy reach of the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic by either sea or air. Most of these destinations can be reached in under an hour by air!
Although this cluster of magnificent islands serves to provide any kind of holidaymaker with their every need, the Turks and Caicos Islands have long been a magnet to sun worshippers and divers. With a staggering 230 miles of pristine beaches and the third largest coral reef on the planet on offer, this should be totally understandable! In fact, many seasoned travellers consider the beaches here the best in the world, and anyone who has dove the Turks and Caicos Islands will tell you that it is amongst the ultimate destinations for their sport.
