Known as the ‘Pearl of the Caribbean’, Margarita Island is one third of Nueva Esparta, one of the 23 states that constitute Venezuela – the other two thirds being the considerably smaller sister islands Coche and Cubagua. It is an island of two very distinct halves, joined by a 23 kilometre-long sand spit separating the ocean from the beautiful Restinga Lagoon National Park. The west of Margarita Island, known as Macanao Peninsula, is an undeveloped area with a mountainous interior, fringed by exquisite beaches and mainly populated by wild deer, goats and hares. This is where La Isla Margarita can offer adventure and off-the-beaten track exploration in stunning surroundings. In direct contrast, the east is where the majority of the island’s 300,000 residents live in towns such as Porlamar and the capital, Asuncion; and where tourist development is mainly focused.

Porlamar presents quite a surprise to the first-time visitor as a modern town with many stylish shops and restaurants amongst traditional buildings and street kiosks selling delicious fried local fish and corn pancakes. Asuncion is a little less surprising as a fairly laid-back, typically Caribbean town, set in a lush valley flanked by hills, and one of those destinations where the joy of a visit is simply to wander around soaking in the atmosphere and getting to understand the ways of the locals. It’s a delightful town, and one of the great ‘undiscovered’ treats of the whole Caribbean.
