drawn visitors to the Dominican Republic
The people of the Dominican Republic are among the friendliest in the Caribbean
and the hospitality here seems more genuine than in more commercialised Puerto
Rico. The weather is nearly perfect year-round and the Dominican Republic’s
white sand beaches are some of the finest in the Caribbean. Punta Cana/Bavaro,
for example is the longest strip of white sand in the entire region.
The climate is semi-tropical with an average yearly temperature of 26 degrees C
(78F)
The Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean between Cuba and Puerto Rico.
With an extension of 48,442 square kilometres, the country is second largest in
the Antilles. This strategic geographic position has turned it into the main
tourist destination of the region and into an ideal place for business and
trade.
The Dominican Republic has a great geographical diversity, having extensive
beaches of white sand, fertile valleys with exuberant vegetation, desert zones
with dune formations, mighty mountain chains where you will find Pico Duarte,
the highest peak and lake Enriquillo the biggest lake, in the Caribbean.
The capital of the Dominican Republic is Santa Domingo. Other important cities
include Santiago, San Pedro de Marcoris, La Romana, Puerto Plata, Barahona, La
Vega, San Francisco and Higuey.
The combination of low prices and beautiful terrain has made the Dominican
Republic one of the fastest growing destinations in the Caribbean. Bargain
hunting Canadians in particular flock here in droves. Don’t expect the lavish
spectacular resorts that you’ll find in Puerto Rico or Jamaica, but do expect
your holiday to be that much less expensive.
